Tips for Shopping Smarter
Let’s be real. Shopping can be overwhelming. As much as we all love a beautiful new handbag or a fabulous vintage find, it often takes a lot of time, energy and not to mention some serious cash to find the perfect piece. Lucky for you, I literally shop for a living, and I am here to share my favorite tips and tricks so you don’t have to stress about your next shopping excursion.
Tip #1: Dress for the Occasion
Start your preparation before you even embark on your shopping adventure and wear clothing that will make it easy to try on whatever you want. Loose, comfortable pants will make you feel more inclined to get undressed, than your very cute, but not so comfy tight jeans.
Most importantly, don’t forget about unobtrusive undergarments. A convertible nude bra and seamless nude underwear make it easy to try on a slew of styles in any color — strapless, racerback, off-the-shoulder, you name it. Beyond your clothing, always remember to wear your everyday makeup. You don’t want anything prohibiting you from imagining yourself in your potential new look.
Tip #2: Bring Your Shopping Prescription
We all have items that we’re missing in our wardrobes, and those are the pieces that are worth buying. Keep your eyes on the prize, and bring a list with you to help you keep your focus. Don’t get distracted by that tenth pair of 4-inch statement stilettos that you’ll only wear once, no matter how fabulous they are.
Tip #3: Don’t Go Too Crazy Over Sales
Don’t get overwhelmed when you see a great deal. Whether it’s 10%, 50%, or 80% off, what matters is that you love what you picked and can see yourself wearing it. You don’t want to end up buying a piece just because you got it for $300 lower than the original price. Pieces like this often end up in the donation bin when the next season rolls around.
Tip #4: Price Per Wear Rule / Timeless Over Trendy
Always imagine three ways in which you can wear your new outfit. If you can’t think of three, it might not be worth it. Also consider the different seasons in which you can wear each piece. For example, if you decide to invest in a great kick fIare light wash jean for summer, find a way to wear it in the fall or winter. Then, it might be worth a hanger in your highly coveted closet.
When thinking about price per wear, also consider the age old battle: trendy vs. timeless. Trendy pieces can be great, but it is far more important to keep your wardrobe stacked with timeless clothing that you can wear for years. Trends will go in and out of style so don’t spend too much on these pieces. Check out my recent post on fast fashion for some more tips here.
Tip #5: You Have to Love It!
Invest only in what you feel good in. Make sure whatever piece you’re contemplating will be truly loved. The tips above will be helpful as you’re deciding if it’s worth it. But, it ultimately comes down to how you feel. You’ve gotta love it!
Tip #6: Have Fun!
As overwhelming as crazy sales and long days searching for the perfect piece can be, remember to have fun! But, remember — if it isn’t fun, that’s why I’m here. Check out my styling menu for more details.
